Overcoming partial vision loss and missing two years of school due to childhood smallpox gave Dr. Das a deep empathy for students facing physical, financial or geographical hurdles. He firmly believed that temporary obstacles or late starts do not define a young person's future.

INMO Talent Search

As Regional Coordinator for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (sponsored by the Department of Atomic Energy), he conducted summer camps and talent-search initiatives across small towns and rural pockets to bring hidden talent into higher mathematics.

In his interactions with young students he shared his own story of overcoming health setbacks, reassuring them that passion and curiosity matter far more than early advantages.

Cultural & Spiritual Revival in Bari

Following his tenure as Vice-Chancellor (2001 onward), Dr. Das deepened his commitment to his ancestral birthplace — Neola village in Bari, Jajpur District. He recognised that true community development requires both material welfare and a strong cultural and spiritual anchor.

Jagannath Temple Construction

Spearheaded and completed the construction of a Lord Jagannath temple in his village, establishing a sacred space for worship, community assembly and social harmony.

Restoring Progressive Traditions

Revived traditional, forward-thinking spiritual practices and local festivals in Bari, using these gatherings to dissolve social barriers and foster unity across all sections of the village.

Grassroots Social Work

Maintained an active partnership with the Gopabandhu Ramadevi Ashram in Bari, leading local welfare programmes, promoting basic education and driving community upliftment.

Dr. Das actively fought the widespread fear of mathematics among school children through public writing and vernacular education.

A celebrated 35-part series on the history and philosophy of zero in Ganita Bichitra, later collected as a book.

Curriculum Reform

Wrote 18 foundational textbooks for primary, secondary and higher-secondary boards (SCERT and CHSE) so that rural school curricula remained engaging and accessible.

Carrying his childhood experience into his educational advocacy, Dr. Das championed a balanced life for students. He urged parents and teachers to encourage play, music, traditional arts and outdoor activities — his core philosophy being that good relaxation brings deep concentration. A well-rounded, stress-free mind, he argued, develops the stamina needed for higher-level problem-solving.

Dr. Das was an outspoken defender of academic freedom, institutional integrity and the dignity of teachers.

Organised national seminars and authored critical papers opposing political interference in higher education and advocating transparent teacher-selection procedures.

Faculty Leadership

Served as President of the Sambalpur University Teachers' Association, the Utkal University Teachers' Association and the All Orissa University Teachers' Federation, leading reforms to safeguard academic standards across the state.
